START OF INTERNET PARABOLIC REFLECTOR SERVICE IN SCANDINAVIA ViaSat, subsidiary of Modern Times Group MTG AB, in cooperation with Tele2, is introducing the first satellite Internet communications system in Scandinavia. This service will offer communications at approximately twice ISDN speeds. The receiver speed of 200-300 kB per second enables the user to surf the Internet at home, via his or her own satellite dish, much faster than with a regular modem. At first, ViaSat and Tele2's new fast Internet service will be offered only to ViaSat cardholders. Later, it will be marketed through ViaSat's approximately 4,000 retail sales outlets. Beginning in January, the Internet service will be available in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. ViaSat has about 900,000 cardholders in Scandinavia, who will be able to receive Internet via satellite. ViaSat's addressable households form a group as large as all the other operators (card systems and cable companies) on the market, combined. "Now, we will not only be able to offer our customers TV-channels, but the Internet, as well, and without the customer having to invest in a digital television," says Peder Ramel, President of ViaSat in Scandinavia. "It is very exciting to be the first in Scandinavia to launch the Internet service of the future," Ramel concludes.
