May 3 2017

‘Stella Blómkvist’ is a three-part crime drama series based on the international bestselling Icelandic novels of the same name. The series features some of the country’s hottest creative talents and will premiere exclusively on MTG’s Nordic video streaming service Viaplay.

Hired to defend a low-life thug accused of murder, lawyer Stella Blómkvist soon finds herself plunged into a violent political conspiracy that threatens Iceland’s very future. The series is adapted from the acclaimed ‘Stella Blómkvist’ novels, written by an anonymous author, which have captivated readers around the world since the first book was published in 1997.

‘Stella Blómkvist’ stars Heida Reed (from the BBC drama ‘Poldark’) and is directed by Óskar Thór Axelsson (‘Black’s Game’; ‘Trapped’). The series is written by Jóhann Ævar Grímsson, Nanna Kristín Magnúsdóttir and Andri Óttarsson. Sagafilm, Iceland’s leading independent production company, is the producer and Red Arrow International will handle international distribution.

Jakob Mejlhede, MTG EVP and Head of Programming and Content Development: “Bleakness, beauty and volcanic activity – Iceland is perfect for great drama, and ‘Stella Blómkvist’ is a smart, super-tense series that could only take place against such a unique backdrop. We’re continuing our journey to become the Nordic region’s leading producer of scripted content, and I’m sure Stella is a star in the making.”

Hilmar Sigurdsson, CEO of Sagafilm: “This series is Sagafilm’s most ambitious project to date, and we’re thrilled to have MTG Studios as our Scandinavian partner in the project.”

MTG Studios is on a journey to become the Nordic region’s leading producer of original content with over 50 projects in the pipeline. A global distribution deal was recently signed for drama series ‘Veni Vidi Vici’ which premiered on Viaplay on 13 April, and LA based comedy drama ‘Swedish Dicks’ has been picked up by US network Pop TV.

The latest production commissioned by MTG Studios is ‘ALEX’, starring Dragomir Mrsic. Other forthcoming titles include drama ‘The Lawyer’; political thriller ‘Embassy Down’; the second season of ‘Swedish Dicks’; Nordic noir ‘Hassel’; and biopic ‘SuperSwede’ about the life of Formula 1 driver Ronnie Peterson.
