MTG Studios original series ‘Black Lake’ acquired by BBC Four and AMC Networks-backed Shudder

May 15 2017

The Nordic thriller series ‘Black Lake’, produced by Banijay Group’s Jarowskij and an original production from MTG Studios, has been acquired by BBC Four and AMC Networks-backed Shudder. The critically acclaimed show is the latest MTG original to reach international audiences, following a global distribution deal for drama series ‘Veni Vidi Vici’ and the pick-up of LA based comedy drama ‘Swedish Dicks’ by a US network.

  • ‘Black Lake’ to air on BBC Four in UK; AMC Networks-backed premium streaming service Shudder acquires first-run rights in US and Canada and second-run UK/Ireland rights
  • ‘Black Lake’ was the most viewed series when broadcast on MTG’s free-TV channel TV3 in autumn 2016; one of the most popular series on Nordic video streaming service Viaplay

‘Black Lake’ follows a group of young friends who visit an abandoned ski resort in northern Sweden, where strange noises from the basement are just the start of a series of horrifying events. The eight-part series stars up-and-coming Nordic talents Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Filip Berg and Valter Skarsgård.

‘Black Lake’ will air on BBC Four in the UK later this year. AMC Networks-backed premium streaming service Shudder has acquired first-run rights in the US and Canada and second-run rights in the UK and Ireland, following deals concluded by international distributor Banijay Rights.

Jakob Mejlhede, MTG EVP and Head of Programming and Content Development: “It’s easy to see if a couch belongs to a ‘Black Lake’ viewer – they’ve only used the edge of it. This is a super-intense viewing experience that showcases MTG’s storytelling capacities to the full, and we can’t wait to bring it to audiences worldwide. Stories don’t get much darker than ‘Black Lake’.”

MTG Studios is on a journey to become the Nordic region’s leading producer of original content with over 50 projects in the pipeline. The latest production commissioned by MTG Studios is ‘ALEX’, starring Dragomir Mrsic. Other forthcoming titles include drama ‘The Lawyer’; political thriller ‘Embassy Down’; the second season of the LA based comedy drama ‘Swedish Dicks’; Nordic noir ‘Hassel’; and biopic ‘SuperSwede’ about the life of Formula 1 driver Ronnie Peterson.
