Viareal maps out National Geographic VR partnership

December 14 2017

As National Geographic’s official virtual reality (VR) partner in the Nordic region, Viareal now offers viewers exclusive 360 VR experiences showcasing the dramatic beauty of the natural world.

Viareal VR National Geographic

More than 20 incredible experiences produced by National Geographic are now available free through Viareal, MTG’s VR app, with more content to come over the coming months. Through Viareal, viewers can chill with penguins in Antarctica and leaf through some of the world’s oldest forests before soaking up the atmosphere at the very edge of space.

In addition, fully immersive experiences based on the work of award-winning Swedish photographer Martin Edström and the immersive studio IVAR Stockholm will be available. Filmed in Zambia, it’s the first ever VR documentary filmed from a pride of lions in the wild.

Martin Edström: “It’s incredibly exciting to enable people to meet lions face to face. With 360 video and VR we’re opening the door to a completely new way to consume content – and I’m thrilled to know the Nordic audience will now be able to meet these big cats as if they were right there next to them, in the wilderness of Zambia.”

MTG and Fox Networks Group have a long-term content and business partnership. In February 2017, MTG’s video-streaming service Viaplay became the first in the Nordic region to offer over 3,000 episodes of programming from the FOX+ on-demand service. MTG offers viewers a range of Fox channels and is also responsible for advertising sales in Sweden and Denmark for Fox Networks Group Europe & Africa.

Viktor Ängmo, Head of Product, MTG Tech: “Some of the world’s most incredible destinations are also the most remote – but thanks to Viareal and National Geographic, all you need is a smartphone. We’re so excited to bring these unique experiences to audiences across the Nordic region. In Viareal’s journey to bring viewers closer to the stories and spaces they love, becoming an official VR partner to a global content pioneer like National Geographic is an amazing milestone.”

Hans Van Rijn, General Manager Nordics, Fox Networks Group: “National Geographic has a long history of combining emerging technologies with world class innovative storytelling. Similar to National Geographic, MTG shares the passion and dedication to VR so we are thrilled to have found a home in the Nordics for our one-of-a-kind VR content portfolio on Viareal.”

Viareal is available free via Google Play, App Store and Oculus Gear VR store. It is compatible with all up-to-date Android and iOS devices, Gear VR and a range of other VR headsets.
