Cristina Stenbeck to award SEK 500,000 prize at Diabetes Gala

October 31 2017

Just two weeks from now, it’s time for Sweden’s first ever TV gala supporting diabetes research – and for the inaugural award of the Maximus Prize.

The Maximus Prize recognises individuals who have achieved extraordinary diabetes research results or improved the lives of diabetics in Sweden. The recipients of the newly created prize will be announced by Cristina Stenbeck.

Anders Jensen & Cristina Stenbeck

Cristina Stenbeck explains: “I lost my brother Max to Type 1 diabetes. I know the cost of living with the illness, and I know the terrible consequences it can have for sufferers and those closest to them. The prize highlights people who have achieved something big and important for people with diabetes in Sweden, and the hope is to contribute both funds and inspiration to take this critical battle forward – the battle for a cure.”

Hosted by Peter Jihde, the Diabetes Gala will offer an evening of world-class live entertainment from Stockholm’s Grand Hôtel on 14 November – World Diabetes Day. Performances by leading artists such as Molly Sandén, Jon Henrik Fjällgren, Brynolf & Ljung, The Sugar Collective and Paul Rey will complement stories from people whose lives have been dramatically impacted by diabetes.

Anders Jensen, EVP & CEO of MTG Sweden (and parent of a son with Type 1 diabetes) says: “Living with diabetes means a daily fight for survival. Every day, five people in Sweden lose this fight and die as a result of diabetes. This needs to change. Through the Diabetes Gala we want to give the battle against diabetes – of all types – a platform that has been missing for too long. There’s a need for knowledge in order to counter prejudice, and for a significant increase in research funding. The vision is clear: diabetes should be curable. We hope that everyone involved in the fight against diabetes can come together and work in common to realize this vision.”

Today, 415 million adults worldwide have diabetes, a figure expected to rise to 642 million by 2040 (source: International Diabetes Federation).

The Diabetes Gala is co-produced by MTG-owned Nice One and Baluba, and will be shown live on TV3, Viafree and Viaplay. All proceeds will go directly to the Swedish Diabetes Fund (Swedish: Diabetesfonden).
